Week 3: We have started to dig deeper into the library resources the Smithsonian has to offer to help further contextualize the archaeofauna we have found at MSC. Additionally, we have identified what other information we need from the National Anthropological Archives to further our research. On Tuesday, we were able to get a tour of the marine mammals collections at MSC. Here we saw some amazing whale skeletons, including the blue whale skull, pictured below. On Wednesday, we visited the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and were able to get a tour of their genetics lab with Dr. Lily Parker. Additionally, Dr. Parker’s intern, Kaylee Tatum is staying with us this week as she completes her brown bear research project at MSC. It has been amazing to hear about Kaylee and Dr. Parker’s research. In addition to our research and exploration of Smithsonian Institution's collections, we have also enjoyed exploring art museums in DC, such as the Renwick Gallery.
